Scarlett Letter Questions

What colony is the setting for the novel?
Boston Massachusetts

Where in the colony does the opening chapter take place?
At the burial ground, next to the very ugly worn down prison is.

For what 2 “practical necessities” did the new colony set aside land?
The Burial Ground and the Prison house.

Who is Anne Hutchinson? How does Hawthorne feel about her?
Anne Hutchinson was a woman who would go around and preacher her idea, she claimed that go spoke to her directly and she was put on trial for it because the puritans believe that he only speaks through the bible. Hawthorne compares Hutchinson to the rose bush because they are both wild and pure and not the same as everyone or everything else.

What 2 possible symbols do the rose have for the reader?
As the prisoners walk into the jailhouse they see the beautiful wild rose bush, to me the rose bush was that one last ounce of hope for the prisoners. To them I am sure this puritan way of life is probably very similar to the life in prison; similarly dressed, similar beliefs so when they see that beautiful rose bush they stop to think about the world outside of the jail and the puritan society…. a free world. Because no only is the puritan people all the same the land is the same as well all of the wild things have been demolished and turned into man made things. Another symbol of the rose bush is its wild and pureness, the rose bush shows beauty and individuality which is why Anne Hutchinson is compared to it because she decides to believe what she wants to believe which make her pure and individual.

The Scarlet Letter DJ

Pg.45 Chap.1 The Prison Door

"A throng of bearded men, in sad-colored garments and gray, steeple-crowned hats, intermixed with women, some wearing hoods and others bareheaded,"
This quote to me symbolizes the plainness of the Puritan society. Everyone dresses the same and acts the same. In this society individuality almost seems frowned upon, everyone is supposed to look and act the same. It seems like the society itself is a prison, because without individuality one would almost feel trapped. This way of life sort of reminds me of the story Harrison Bergeron, in that story everything is controlled and the society is a dystopia and I think that Puritan society is too. Because there are so many rules and ways of life you are supposed to follow and if you don't you are shunned. So to me the two stories are similar.

The Scarlett Letter DJ

Chapter 2 pg.50

1.)"Those who had before known her, and had expected to behold her dimmed and obscured by a disastrous cloud, were astonished, and even startled to perceive how her beauty shone out, and made a halo of the misfortune and ignominy in which she was enveloped."

The towns people are expecting to her look not at all the way she does. She is extremely beautiful and the way she is dressed is also extremely beautiful, and nobody understands, to them she is so unbelievably terrible for the wrong she committed. They think she is a whore, assuming that the standards of how a whore looks is pretty low so her unexpected beauty shows that she is not a whore in my opinion. She is genuine and and pure.

Oops forgot to post this before i left.....Iroquis questions

1a. The Five Nations (the Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga and the Seneca tribes) confederate lords.

2a. Adodarhoh, and his cousin lords Adadarhoh is the Chief confederate lord of the Onondaga, on whose land the council fire was lit.

3a. “When a candidate lord is to be installed he shall furnish four strings of shells on span in length bound together at one end” this will constitute the evidence to his pledge to the confederate lords saying that he will live according to the constitution and exercise all the affairs. He has to hold the shell strings in his hand and speak to the opposite side of the council fire.

4a. They crown the newcomers with the antlers of deer’s, which is the emblem of their lordship, they also refer to the unborn children as the faces beneath the surface because they have not risen yet.

5a. I think that the values are appropriate. Although the passage contains a lot of things that mostly relate to peace and good will. It just wants the people to work hard and become good examples to those you encounter. The only thing that seems a little intense is when they say “ Neither anger nor fury shall find lodgment in your mind and all your words and actions shall be marked with calm deliberation.” Although that is intense it is true because in many cases when you become too angry and start to express your emotions in an angry way you start to become irrational and selfish.

1b. The purpose of the meeting is to initiate new members, create the alliance of peace by planting the tree. Discuss important events or things that have to do with the Iroquois. It is important in this tribe to be able to speak because that’s all that they have they don’t know how to write and so everything is horal. And they are not aloud to show emotions so they have to get really good at controlling themselves.

2b. No they are not actually cousins, they want to be brought together as a giant family. The bond that these places share is like the bonds of cousins. It backs up the idea of the alliance they have made.

3b. Qualities you should have: You have to be calm against anger, or offensive actions, and criticism. Your heart has to be filled with peace and good will and your mind filled with yearning for the welfare of your people. You have to carry out your duty and your firmness shall be tempered with tenderness.

Qualities you shouldn’t have: You can’t show anger while speaking because you anger will get the best of you. You cannot be selfish. Don’t only think about the present but the past.

4b. Nature was used in an extreme metaphorical sense. Planting the tree was like planting peace to watch it grow. Deer’s antler was the emblem of your lordship. Beneath the surface growing up were the future children of the tribes. They used nature to represent what they wanted in the future, people, and alliances, and everything grows like nature does.

5b. We now lay down the law of the beautiful Anna tribe. All joining the beautiful Anna tribe must swear to give all there money to the lord (Anna). Peace and love must dictate the tribe unless someone tries to steal the tribe’s food then you must know how to fight because it’s WAR! All those who live in the tribe must paint themselves blue for originality of our tribe. For those who would like to ask the all mighty Anna for something you must bring her some sort of baked goods. Or steak……the all might Anna loves steak.
